{"id":2517,"date":"2021-01-07T19:01:38","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T19:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deborahgjeloshaj.co.uk\/staging\/?p=2517"},"modified":"2021-01-16T16:46:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-16T16:46:16","slug":"getting-to-know-beethoven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deborahgjeloshaj.co.uk\/staging\/2021\/01\/07\/getting-to-know-beethoven\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting to know Beethoven"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020 musicians across Europe and the world were preparing to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the worlds most outstanding composers in western musical history <strong><em>Ludvig van Beethoven<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 As the pandemic spread many of these celebration concerts were cancelled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spirit of \u2018not forgetting\u2019 this genius of music,  I have been inspired to share with you \u201cShine a Light into the Life of Beethoven\u201d. A very brief look at the masterful Ludvig van Beethoven. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sit back and relax with coffee and cake or maybe a glass of wine, and prepare to be wowed even though we will only scratch the surface of this intriguing and formidable character\u2026\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\"\/>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cCOURAGEOUS\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born December 16, 1770, in Bonn, Beethoven was raised in stimulating, although unhappy, surroundings. His early signs of musical talent were subjected to the capricious discipline of his father, a singer in the court chapel. In 1789, due to his father\u2019s abuse and alcoholism, the young Beethoven was forced to begin supporting his family as a court musician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cCREATIVE\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After arriving in Vienna (1792) Beethoven alternated between compositions based openly on Classical models, such as the \u2018String Quartet in A Major op.18 no.5, 1800 (patterned on Mozart\u2019s String Quartet K.464) and those based on looser Italianate structures, such as the song \u2018Adelaide\u2019 (1795).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: Adelaide, song for voice & piano, Op. 46 (Beethoven)\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qurafBb09JI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Quatuor Eb\u00e8ne plays Beethoven quartet Nr. 5 A major\" width=\"680\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cfcMGdZwqKY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cREVOLUTIONARY\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1800 Beethoven had become a huge musical personality\u2026 he was a man whose music was \u2018In demand\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>1803 heralded the start of the Napoleonic Wars and Beethoven was keen to impress upon this. He took on a \u2018heroic\u2019 style of writing that was profoundly influenced by the then current European state of War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beethoven - Symphony No. 3 in E flat major (Op. 55) Eroica Berliner Philharmoniker\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nbGV-MVfgec?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1803 (premiered in 1805) Beethoven wrote his \u201cEroica\u201d Symphony and dedicated the work instantly to Napoleon Bonaparte. As Napoleon began his take over of Europe Beethoven\u2019s opinion about Napoleon changed and he scrubbed out the dedication on the original score.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cPASSIONATE\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From as early as 1896 Beethoven noticed he was losing his hearing and by 1810 Beethoven was almost totally deaf.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the preceding years Beethoven\u2019s concerns over his worsening deafness were beginning to lead to greater social isolation and he suffered long bouts of depression. Despite this he remained defiant and prolific in his output.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His passion was still alive and is apparent in works of magnificent\u00a0 scope, such as the \u2018Piano Concerto no.5\u2032 (Emperor, 1809), his \u2018Symphony no.5\u2019 (1808) and his \u2018Piano Sonata op.57\u2019 (The \u2018Appassionata\u2019, 1805). In these works Beethoven achieved an ideal synthesis between popular and learned styles, between the humorous and the sublime.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judged inaccessible by the sheer difficulty to play and complexity to understand in their time, the string quartets have become \u2013 as has so much of his music, against which all other musical achievements are measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Danish String Quartet plays Beethoven quartet no. 15 in A minor, op. 132, 3rd mov. (Molto adagio)\" width=\"680\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gumi5pEpOaA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cGENIUS\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beethoven dazzled the aristocracy with his piano improvisations, he stunned the public with his immense symphonies and left the world in awe of an output of music so great it is hard to think that anyone will ever come close to matching his genius.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The works of Beethoven\u2019s last period are each marked by an individuality that later composers could admire but scarcely emulate. In the \u2018Ninth Symphony\u2019 and the \u2018Missa Solemnis\u2019 he gave expression to an all-embracing view of idealised humanity rooted in the deeply in the Enlightenment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ninth Symphony was the first ever symphony to include a full chorus and soloists, in \u2018Ode to Joy\u2019.
